Biclausal vs. monoclausal focus constructions in Tilapa Otomi

چکیده

Abstract This paper tackles issues that involve distinguishing clefts from other monoclausal focus constructions when describing the syntax of lesser-known languages. I concentrate on Tilapa Otomi, which is, morphologically speaking, most conservative language Otomi family Mexico (Oto-Pamean; Oto-Manguean). propose has (at least) two specialized constructions: one is a biclausal, and analyze as cleft construction, another monoclausal, it thus not but could be superficially mistaken to with zero copula. use various syntactic tests distinguish both constructions, mainly word order negation.

Predicate Composition and the Determination of Scope

In this paper we argue that the Japanese causative constructions should be viewed as a complex predicate having two possible c-structure realizations (i.e. a single monoclausal f-structure, and monoclausal and biclausal c-structures). Along with the Optimality Theory architecture, we suggest that the emergence of two c-structures in predicate composition is a consequence of the interactions tha...

Contrast in Focus Persian and Turkish focus constructions

Persian and Turkish exhibit a number of striking similarities, including the following: (a) many verbal concepts are expressed by complex predicates (CPr) consisting of a non-verbal element (NVE) and a light verb (LV) (Folli et al. 2005, Megerdoomian 2002, Kornfilt 2003), (b) both languages exhibit scrambling, (c) they both mark direct objects for specificity (Enç1991, Karimi 2005), and (d) foc...

Focus and topic in VP-anaphora constructions*

This paper explores the information structure of VP-anaphora constructions in English, Spanish, and German. The goal is to provide an initial account of the syntactic and prosodic licensing mechanisms of VP-anaphora and to suggest some theoretical consequences for the syntactic representation of the different types of focus and topic. Recent studies (e.g. Rooth 1992b; Tomioka 1995; Fox 1998) ha...

Two Subject Asymmetries in Defaka Focus Constructions

Defaka allows optional fronting of one XP in a clause; this fronting carries with it some type of discourse prominence, and is taken here to be a process of focus movement. Interestingly, this movement can trigger special morphology in two different places, depending on what kind of phrase is focused. This results in two asymmetries between subjects and other types of phrases. First, focused lo...
